Wolfolk brings the goods as Wise drub Northwest in 4A semifinal

By Kyle McFadden

UPPER MARLBORO- Before Myles Wolfolk shuttled on to what he was saying, he paused and stared up into the Friday night dark sky. Flashing back to the sweltering summer workouts that aided him to present success, it finally struck across his mind that reality is settling in.

All of the crack of dawn, rude alarm-awakened mornings that signaled the start of AM training sessions paid dividends. At least for another 48 minutes in the still unbeaten 2015 campaign as Wise drubs Northwest, 37-15 to advance to the 4A final next Friday night.

“This is what I’ve been working for all off-season,” the Virginia Tech commit, Wolfolk said, who finished with 86 receiving yards on six receptions, 14 points of his own and snagging an interception as well. “Who could ask for more? Everyday in the summer, forcing yourself to wakeup and workout. Just what more could you ask for after dominating like you’re supposed to.”

Fueled by hallmark athleticism, smash-mouth defense and Division-1 skill players with Wolfolk among them, the Pumas continuously stepped on the throttle for the entirety of four quarters.

On their first offensive drive, the Pumas took advantage of pristine field position that started at the Northwest 36-yard line to fire the games tone-setting opening salvo. Wolfolk took a 14-yard catch and run from Jabari Lewis and then converted on the 2-point conversion moments later.

Then, minutes old into the second quarter, the Pumas capitalized on another golden start to a drive, this time at the Jaguar 34-yard line and it was hammered home by a four yard score from C.J. Rainey.

Another converted 2-point conversion made it 16-0, Wise, with 9:28 left in the second quarter.

“We’ve been working hard in the weight room since January for this,” Rainey said, who finished with 205 yards rushing and one touchdown on 34 carries. “We wanted to run the ball a lot tonight and it was popping.”

On the ensuing kickoff, Northwest’s Martin Foray found a seam up the left sideline and bursted 92-yards to the house to cut the deficit down to 16-8.

Whenever Northwest appeared to regain momentum, someone, no matter who it is, quickly swung it back onto the Wise sideline.

“Confidence,” Wolfolk said. “We never get down on ourselves, always have each others backs.”

With under three minutes left until halftime, Lewis flipped a pass to Wolfolk that he took 21-yards to the end zone. Wise then pushed the lead to 30-8 early in the third quarter courtesy of a Damon Hayes 15-yard pass and catch from Lewis.

“Big time players make big time plays,” Wise head coach DaLawn Parrish said. “Myles (Wolfolk), he’s been doing it all year long.”

Northwest then got a quick score and a turnover to cut the Wise lead down to 30-15 early in the fourth. But, like the first three quarters, when Northwest tried gobbling up just a little bit of momentum, Wolfolk was there to deny any chance of that happening – coming up a pivotal interception with 3:57 left in the game.

“He’s tough,” Parrish said. “He understands what we ask him. He’s a great leader.”

Wise will take on Howard next Friday at 7:30 pm at M&T Bank Stadium in the Class 4A state championship.

“We had a goal from the start to win the state title,” Parrish said. “Forget about the undefeated thing, that’s just how it went down. To win (the state championship) would mean a lot to this school, the community and everyone in this program.”
