Preseason high school football: Passing attack charges Seneca Valley to win over Sherwood, 3-1

Seneca Valley head coach Fred Kim addresses his team after defeating Sherwood in scrimmage action on Thursday night.

GAITHERSBURG — It’s no secret that Adrian Feliz-Platt and Darius Golston will be a forceful duo in the backfield for Seneca Valley football in 2016. But what’s unanswered is the supporting cast around the dynamite tandem, especially through the air.

On Thursday night, Seneca Valley answered some of those question marks as quarterback Zack Robinson tossed for 128 yards and two touchdowns to charge the Screamin’ Eagles past Sherwood in scrimmage action, 3-1.

It was the first scrimmage of the year for both teams.

“Now we know we can pass the ball for sure,” Feliz-Platt said. “We didn’t expect that.”

Robinson also threw two interceptions.

As opposed to traditional high school football game of four, 12-minute quarters, Thursday night’s exhibition was a ‘controlled scrimmage’. Each team ran 10 plays in a row, regardless of what happened, alternating back and forth for a total of five drives.

On the fourth play of the first drive, Robinson floated a 58-yard touchdown pass to Dawayne Kelley down the right sideline to put Seneca Valley on top, 1-0.

Sherwood tied it at 1-1 on the ensuing drive when quarterback Michael Mbony flipped a 61-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Jarvis Tillman in the middle of the field. Mbony is expected to start under center for Sherwood after spending majority of the time at defensive back last year. Tillman is a junior transfer from Paint Branch who hasn’t played football since ninth grade.

Robinson found Harold Dotson on an 18-yard slant across the middle of the field to extend Seneca Valley’s lead to 2-1 and George Castro picked up the final score on a one yard touchdown run.

The Screamin’ Eagles graduated all five of their offensive linemen and are preparing to roll out a new group this fall. Though many are undersized and don’t have the experience yet, Thursday night showed room for optimism down the road.

“They stepped up today,” Feliz-Platt said of the offensive line. “Sherwood was hitting and our line wasn’t afraid.”

Feliz-Platt (three carries for nine yards) and Golston (two carries for seven yards) both played one drive for Seneca Valley. Kelley finished with 88 receiving yards on two receptions.

Freshman running back Ajahni Terry had 19 rushing yards on three carries and a fair share of hard hits on the defensive end as a linebacker, where he’s expected to start this season.

“This showed us we can hang with the bigger teams,” Golston said. “We just need to execute like we did tonight.”

Boston college commit, Travis Levy, totaled 43 rushing yards on eight carries and Aubrey Hobbs snagged two interceptions, both for Sherwood.

“It was fun, it’s been a while,” Golston said. “It feels good to hit somebody else.”

Check back over the next couple days for previews on Seneca Valley and Sherwood.
